At first, planting the cucumbers against a warm, sunny shed wall looked like a brilliant idea.
The cukes started fast, and they bore fruit by mid-June. Then the weather got hot, and the sun-drenched wall began roasting the plants. My brilliant idea suddenly looked sadistic.
The leaves became living sundials, robust at dawn but drooping as the hours passed.
The fruit turned bitter, then the plants quit producing at all. Hey, I understood. Their situation was terrible, and passive resistance is all plants can muster.

Not all garden changes happen over years or months. The difference between cool morning and scorched afternoon makes me cringe.
Maybe this southwest wall could support a cold frame for winter seedlings. |
